چکیده

most sweet cherry (prunus avium l.) cultivars are self-incompatible and have problems of ‎fertilization and fruit set. to produce commercial crops they need compatible and suitable ‎pollinizers. the compatibility of “zarde daneshkadeh”, “protiva”, “sorati lavasan”, “haj-yosefy” ‎and “meshkin shahr” cultivars with “shoa-o-saltaneh” as seed parent studied in a randomized ‎complete block design (rcbd) with three replications. the compatibility of various pollens on ‎‎“shoa-o-saltaneh”, studied with two methods of controlled pollination and observation of pollen ‎tube growth with fluorescence microscopy. the results of the controlled pollination method showed ‎that “meshkin shahr” and “protiva” cultivars are compatible and “zarde daneshkadeh”, “sorati ‎lavasan” and “haj-yosefy” are incompatible. the mean of fruit set in “shoa-o-saltaneh” cultivar ‎using pollen grain of “zarde daneshkadeh”, “protiva”, “sorati lavasan”, “haj-yosefy” and ‎‎“meshkin shahr” were 0, 4.2, 0.2, ,0.4 and 15.7 percent respectively. the results show that sweet ‎cherry cv. “shoaosaltaneh” is a self-incompatible cultivar (fruit set = 0) and it needs compatible and ‎suitable pollinizers for fruit set. the microscopic examination of pollinated flowers showed that ‎pollen tube of “meshkin shahr” cultivar reached to the ovary in 96 hours after pollination. these ‎observations confirm the results from field controlled hybridization.‎

Genetic Diversity and Relatedness of Sweet Cherry (Prunus Avium L.) Cultivars Based on Single Nucleotide Polymorphic Markers

Most previous studies on genetic fingerprinting and cultivar relatedness in sweet cherry were based on isoenzyme, RAPD, and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. This study was carried out to assess the utility of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers generated from 3' untranslated regions (UTR) for genetic fingerprinting in sweet cherry. A total of 114 sweet cherry germplasm representin...

Antioxidant Properties of Sweet Cherries(Prunus avium L.) - Role of Phenolic Compounds

Sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.) contain various phenolic compounds which contribute to total antioxidant activity. Total polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity in a fruits of a number of selected sweet cherry genotypes were investigated. Total polyphenols content ranged from 4.12 to 8.34 mg gallic acid equivantents/g dry fruit weight and total tannins conte...

Improving germination of Prunus avium L. seeds

To break dormancy and increase the germination of Prunus avium L. (mazzard cherry) seeds, various methods were tested including the removal of the seed coat after cold moist stratification and treatment with GA3, KNO3, or thiourea. Treatments with 7,500 ppm KNO3 after 120 days of stratification were more effective, yielding 64.54% germination of seeds with coat. In seeds without coat, 500 ppm G...

Ascorbic acid metabolism during sweet cherry (Prunus avium) fruit development

To elucidate metabolism of ascorbic acid (AsA) in sweet cherry fruit (Prunus avium 'Hongdeng'), we quantified AsA concentration, cloned sequences involved in AsA metabolism and investigated their mRNA expression levels, and determined the activity levels of selected enzymes during fruit development and maturation. We found that AsA concentration was highest at the petal-fall period (0 days afte...

Graft Compatibility Between Peach Cultivars and Prunus Rootstocks

Trials were established at Aula Dei Experimental Station (EEAD-CSIC, Zaragoza, Spain) to assess graft compatibility between peach cultivars [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] and new Prunus spp. rootstocks or selections. Peach cvs. Catherina and Tebana and nectarine cvs. Big Top and Summergrand were grafted on peach seedlings, plum rootstocks, almond x peach hybrids, and other interspecific rootstock...

PaCYP78A9, a Cytochrome P450, Regulates Fruit Size in Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium L.)

Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is an important fruit crop in which fruit size is strongly associated with commercial value; few genes associated with fruit size have, however, been identified in sweet cherry. Members of the CYP78A subfamily, a group of important cytochrome P450s, have been found to be involved in controlling seed size and development in Arabidopsis thaliana, rice, soybean, and ...
